French luxury cars often struggle for sales and potential buyers avoided the Avantime, making even the unpopular Renault Vel Satis look popular. With only 8,557 built, Matra (who built the car for Renault) left the business of building cars - partially due to losses sustained from the Avantime - and Renault did not look to continue production elsewhere.
