Citroen has long been an innovator, bringing front wheel drive to mass market cars with the Traction Avant, and pioneering hydro pneumatic suspension and swivelling headlights in the DS.

Doing things differently doesn’t always lead to profits, and after forays into rotary engines and the brief acquisition of Maserati just as the seventies oil crisis hit, a Bankrupt Citroen was bought out by Peugeot to create Groupe PSA.

Slowly Citroen cars became more conventional and the quirkier elements disappeared from the range in the name of parts and platform sharing. More recent Citroens have tended to not be too different from the Peugeot equivalent, with only some more unusual designs such as the C4 Cactus and Ami appearing.
