The Land Rover was first built in 1948 by the Rover car company, as a response to the need for a versatile and capable off-road vehicle. Known as the Series I it was designed to be a simple, robust, and utilitarian vehicle that could tackle the toughest terrain. The vehicle was an immediate success, and soon gained popularity among farmers, explorers, and military forces.
As part of the Rover group, Land Rover was bought by BMW in 1994, before being sold onto Ford in 2000 when the Rover Group was broken up and became a part of the Ford Premium Auto Group.
In 2008 Tata Motors acquired both Land Rover and Jaguar from Ford, creating JLR, and since then many components and development costs have been shared between the two companies. Land Rover is still known for producing some of the most capable SUVs available.
