Scion

In 2003 Toyota launched the Scion brand in the USA, aimed at capturing a slice of the style conscious youth market that the standard Toyota and Lexus brands were missing.

Incidentally a very similar concept undertaken by multiple corporations, including Toyota in Japan called WiLL was coming to a close, with poor results. This sadly was repeated for Scion.

Launched with a range of smaller cars with more personalisation options, sales were initially quite strong, but soon started tailing off. Scion however did have the youngest average buyer of any manufacturer. With the hit of the 2008 – 2009 financial crisis, Scions products struggled further as their target market bore the brunt of the financial hit.

A stagnating model range soldiered on, only invigorated by a re-badged Toyota GT86 being sold as the Scion FR-S. By 2017, with dealers dropping the slow selling marque, Toyota decided to discontinue the brand with the remaining models either dropped or incorporated into the Toyota range.
