Jeep
Jeep is an American manufacturer known for producing rugged, off-road vehicles and currently plays an important role in the Stellantis group.
In 1970, American Motors Corporation (AMC) acquired Jeep as their offroad and utility models along with their government contracts complimented AMCs passenger car range. With the merger of AMC and Renault in the 1980s, along with the launch of the very successful XJ model Cherokee, the Jeep brand spread across Europe and slowly became one of AMCs most valuable assets.
With the near collapse of AMC and its subsequent acquisition by Chrysler, Jeep remained as the only AMC brand retained by Chrysler and was heavily invested in to broaden the model range, always including the integral Wrangler and Cherokee/Liberty models. Many components were shared with the Dodge and Chrysler brands during this time.
In 2009, Chrysler filed for bankruptcy and was ultimately acquired by Italian carmaker Fiat, which formed the new company Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) and slowly some Fiat based technologies such as the U-Connect head units made their way to Jeep products. With FCA now absorbed into the larger Stellantis, platform sharing across the wider group is encroaching on the Jeep range.
