First built in 1959, for the first 10 years of its life the Mini was sold as both an Austin and a Morris, before becoming a marque of its own in 1969. Evolution of the original car continued until emissions and crash safety regulations finally caught up with it and the final original Mini rolled off the production line in 2000.

With production of the original Mini at an end, the rights to the Mini name were transferred from the Rover Group to BMW who began production of the new Mini.

The new Mini did not retain the space efficiency of the original, nor the bargain pricing but did remain exceptionally fashionable and a hoot to drive. The new car was an immediate hit with both the press and the public.

Since 2000 the new Mini range has expanded from the original 3 door hatch and convertible models to include the Clubman Estate, Countryman crossover and a 5 door hatch.
