Porsche was setup to offer automobile development in 1931 with the original Volkswagen Beetle as an early project, they have been involved in development of plenty of vehicles since then.

1948 saw the start of car production with the 356 which evolved slowly into the famous Porsche 911 which has been a staple of their range ever since.

The late nineties saw Porsche in some financial trouble when they released the first Boxster, which along with the 911 (996) arriving about a year later rapidly turned their fortunes around.

A merger with the Volkswagen Group in 2011 built on years of co-operation between the two companies.
